Every Upcoming Animated Disney Movie (2025)

Disney has several upcoming animated movies and the slate looks intriguing. Disney has found incredible success in live-action properties over the years, but the studio's bread and butter for decades has been with animated movies made for the entire family. On top of the classic animated tales that largely defined Disney's success, the acquisition of Pixar in 2006 brought a great partner to produce massive hits. Over the last decade, Disney and Pixar have both found great success with franchises like Frozen and Toy Story, as well as original films like Coco or Encanto.

Even though Disney's animated movies have encountered some struggles at the box office since 2020, this form of storytelling remains a critical part of the Mouse House's strategy. The success of Inside Out 2 at the summer box office could help bring back confidence in these types of movies. There are plans for more new stories from Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, and the more recently acquired 20th Century Animation, as well as ideas for various franchises to continue. These movies might only be a fraction of Disney's upcoming movies and release dates, but they represent the studio's animated future.

Pixar will make a return to sci-fi in 2025 with the release of Elio. The new, original adventure from the studio follows the titular boy as he becomes part of an intergalactic story as an ambassador to Earth. The voice cast includes recognizable names like Zoe Saldaña, Jameela Jamil, and Brad Garrett while newcomer Yonas Kibreab will voice the titular character.

Despite originally being planned for a 2024 release, Disney elected to delay Elio until 2025 as part of changes made to the overall slate in response to strikes and box office struggles. The movie also faced more trouble as Coco's co-director Adrian Molina left the project during production to work on a new movie.

However, there is still a lot to be excited about, especially as the original movie looks to be pushing the boundaries of Pixar storytelling. After Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian took over directing duties from Molina, Sharafian shared details on the movie and the fact that Elio would contain some horror elements. It will be interesting to see how Elio handles a more intense PG Pixar movie, but it could be something very special from the studio.

The film was announced on February 8 2023, along with several other major Disney animation sequels. For the film, Tim Allen reprises his role as the space-faring toy, Buzz Lightyear, once again.

Audiences will see Woody and Buzz again as Pixar has confirmed Toy Story 5 is in development. The news came from Bob Iger in early 2023 as part of his second stint as Disney's CEO. While the movie has a release date of June 19, 2026, most of the details surrounding the story and cast are not known. It has been suggested that the film will focus on the toys dealing with becoming redundant in an age where children have many more digital play options.

The Toy Story movies are the most beloved Pixar franchise to date, but there is a sense from some fans that the series doesn't know when to end. While Toy Story 3 was seen as a perfect ending for the franchise, Toy Story 4 came along to give another ending. With the fifth film now promised, there is a risk of ruining the legacy. However, the promise of the toys taking on an army of Buzz Lightyears is a fun concept.

Disney has confirmed plans for Frozen 3 to be among the studio's upcoming animated features. There is little known about the highly-anticipated sequel to 2019's Frozen II. It is expected that Anna and Elsa will once again be prominently featured, allowing Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel to reprise their roles. Meanwhile, it should be expected that Olaf (Josh Gad) and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) will be back as well.

The story will build on Frozen 2's ending and the revelation that Elsa is the Fifth Spirit, as well as Anna becoming Queen of Arendelle. Concept art for the third movie also shows a shadowy figure threatening the sisters, hinting at a new antagonist after the third movie chose not to have a traditional villain character. The movie has confirmed its release date for November 24, 2027, so fans have a long wait ahead of them.

6 Frozen 4 Is In Development

Another Sequel Has Been Confirmed

Audiences will see more of Anna and Elsa than expected, as Disney has also confirmed plans for Frozen 4 already. Bob Iger was the first to tease the prospects of a fourth movie in the franchise, but Walt Disney Animation Studios CCO and prior franchise creator Jennifer Lee has since confirmed the intention. Nothing is confirmed in regard to the story or release date at this point. There is a possibility the movie will be made in conjunction with Frozen 3, allowing it and Frozen 4 to come out relatively close to one another.

While not mentioned in any way, Frozen 3 could be part one of the story, with Frozen 4 being the second part. Movies split into two parts have gotten a somewhat mixed response among fans as the first chapter can often seem like little more than a setup. However, with Frozen 4 not yet having a confirmed release date, it is possible it will be less connected to the third movie than has been rumored.

Plans have been confirmed for Zootopia 2 as well. Disney found great success with the first movie upon its release in 2016, as it made over $1 billion at the box office. The new movie will return to the titular town populated by animals and will see the return of Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). However, the sequel will have the duo leaving their jobs on the police force and becoming private investigators. They will then be chasing down a wanted snake named Gary (Ke Huy Quan).

The inclusion of Gary addresses a popular topic raised by fans that there are no reptiles in Zootopia which could play into the story of the sequel. Zootopia 2 will also explore new areas of the city, including a water-based area known as Marsh Market. It looks to be maintaining the hugely entertaining mystery comedy aspects of the first movie which will be a thrill when Zootopia 2 is released on November 26th, 2025.

4 A New Carlos López Estrada Movie Is In Development

Announced In 2019

After the success of Raya and the Last Dragon, it was announced that Disney and director Carlos López Estrada were meant to collaborate again. At the time of the announcement in 2019, there was an expectation that the movie would arrive in a relatively short amount of time. However, several years have passed since the project's original announcement, and there have been no updates on where it stands since.

Instead, Lopez has agreed to direct a live-action version of the Disney animated version of Robin Hood for Disney+ and tackle a live-action Your Name movie. With such a busy schedule ahead of him, it is unclear if Estrada's next animated movie is still in the works with Disney, or if the project has been canceled. Nevertheless, it is not likely that fans will see the movie hitting theaters anytime soon.

3 Rio 3 Is In Development

It Was Revealed In 2022

There have also been reports that Rio 3 is in development at 20th Century Animation. The project was revealed in an unexpected way, as a PR page from Ice Age: Adventures of Wild Buck listed screenwriter Ray DeLaurentis as working on the next installment of the Rio franchise. Since then, the movie has been officially confirmed and it has been announced that Jim Hecht will be taking over the screenwriting duties with Carlos Saldanha directing.

While the story details for Rio 3 are not yet announced, Saldanha has hinted at exploring the established characters in a deeper way. This suggests that, although there are no casting confirmations at this point, the planned story would see the main cast returning. The Rio movies' star-studded voice cast included Jesse Eisenberg, Will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, and Jemaine Clement. No release date has been confirmed for Rio 3.

2 Ice Age 6 Is In Development

The Animated Franchise Is Returning

Ice Age 6 will continue on the beloved animated franchise with what is actually the seventh movie in the series, including the spinoff The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. In the same document that detailed Ray DeLaurentis' involvement in Rio 3, his work on the next installment of the Ice Age movies was also revealed. The news was further confirmed by John Leguizamo, who voices Sid in the franchise, stating in September 2024 that they were getting ready to make the sequel (via Collider).

While the last entry in the franchise focused on the adventures of Buck Wild, it appears as though the franchise will return to its main storyline and see the return of the main cast, including Leguizamo, Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Simon Pegg. While there are no story details announced as to how the series will continue, Ice Age 6 is set to be released on December 18, 2026.
