Palms In Massachusetts's Climate

California's mild climate and varied landscapes make it an ideal location for many palm species. From the deserts to the coast, palms thrive in several regions: California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera): Native to the desert regions, this palm is the only palm tree native to California.

Water - Palms prefer soil consistently moist, but never overly wet. Overwatering quickly turns palm fronds yellow and brown. Before you water, indoors or out, check the soil by hand. Water when it's dry about a finger's length deep, but still cool and moist beneath.

We found that palms are over five times more numerous in Neotropical rainforests found in the Americas (such as the Amazon) than in comparable Asian and African forests. In fact in the Americas, up to 60% of larger tree stems (exceeding 10cm diameter) are palms.

Most Palm trees were likely first brought to California by the Spanish in the early 18th century. The specific species of palm trees commonly seen in California, the Canary Island Date Palm, the Mexican Fan Palm, and the California Fan Palm, originated from the Canary Islands, Mexico, and Baja California respectively.
