Made with homemade vegan vanilla ice cream, it is a decadent treat. You could use store-bought ice cream of course, but I think you'll love the vanilla ice cream recipe as much if not more than store-bought.

🧾 Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients. To see the full list of ingredients with measurements and instructions, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Vanilla ice cream: I used Homemade Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream, but you could also use store-bought vegan ice cream. I used store-bought in the above photo when updating this post. It was NOT as good as my homemade version!
Strawberries: I used fresh strawberries. You could also use frozen strawberries.
Oat milk: I love the taste of oat milk, but you could use any dairy-free milk you want.
Ice cream is a good thickener. If you want a thick milkshake, use less oat milk and more ice cream.

Vegan Strawberry Milkshake
This sweet creamy Vegan Strawberry Milkshake is made with only 3 ingredients. Made with fresh strawberries, it's the perfect summer dessert.
If you prefer a thicker milkshake, start with less oat milk. You could also add more vanilla ice cream, but then the strawberry flavor will be less prominent.
Serve right away or store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream – We used low-sugar coconut milk vanilla ice cream to make a healthier vegan milkshake. Plant-Based Milk of Choice – Almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk work in this milkshake. Frozen Fruits – Use frozen strawberries for a strawberry milkshake or frozen banana for a banana milkshake.
Strawberries blended with milk and creamy DQ® vanilla soft serve into a classic DQ® shake garnished with whipped topping. We hand-blend our signature soft serve until it's velvety thick and delicious. Next, we crown it with a swirl of whipped topping, of course.
1. Basic Milkshake Without Ice Cream. For the simplest no-ice-cream milkshake, simply blend ice cubes with milk, sugar, and a dash of vanilla extract. The more fat that's in the milk, the creamier your milkshake will be—if you want a super-creamy milkshake, use equal parts heavy cream and milk.
There are a number of commercially-produced cow's milk alternatives made from soy, coconut, rice, potato, oat, almond, hazelnut, cashew, hemp, flax, sunflower, and even macadamia. Most of these are available in a few different flavors (such as “original,” “vanilla,” “chocolate,” and “mocha”).
Yes, in the U.K. our standard milkshakes (Banana, Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla) are all suitable for vegetarians and have been approved by the Vegetarian Society.
In fact, like McDonald's, Dairy Queen doesn't even call its shakes milkshakes, it too sticks with "shakes." And malts. Both the shakes and malts at DQ use as a base "Artificially Flavored Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream" which, according to the proper definition of ice cream is not real ice cream.
A milkshake typically consists of: milk, ice cream and syrup. A smoothie is typically fruit-based, has no syrup or ice cream and may or may not contain milk (ice/water is typically used instead).
From a foodservice perspective, how McDonald's vegan ice cream fares will be interesting to see. This is not the first time the fast-food behemoth has introduced a dairy-free ice cream. In 2022, it launched vegan versions of the iconic McFlurry in Germany in two flavours (including a KitKat version).
For extra thick and creamy vegan milkshakes, use no more than ¼ to ⅓ cup non-dairy milk per 8 cubes. If the milkshake becomes too thin, add more frozen milkshake cubes or a few slices of frozen banana to make it thicker.
The addition of ice works so well because it adds texture to a shake beyond the standard, creamy ingredients. It's essentially a way to thicken up a shake and add oomph beyond the standard milk. If you're a fan of smooth and thin shakes, however, you can forgo the ice.
Plant-based fats are the best way to thicken vegan ice cream. Coconut cream, full-fat coconut milk and coconut oil will give the creamiest and thickest results.
In fact, many non-dairy milk options have 10 or more added ingredients, including salt, sugar, stabilizers, sunflower lecithin, gellan gum, zinc gluconate, calcium carbonate, vitamin E acetate, vitamin B12, vitamin D2 and emulsifiers like locust bean gum.
Dairy-less frozen desserts replace milk and cream with alternatives like coconut, soy, oat, cashew, or almond milk. Many other ingredients remain the same between the dairy and dairy-free versions. And, just like dairy ice cream, non-dairy ice cream can vary widely in terms of sugar, fat, and calorie content.
